The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test, or JLPT, used to assess Japanese language ability for nonnative speakers, is to change from the next test, in July, to put more focus on measuring communicative competence required to perform various tasks.
Changes include new question formats to measure practical communication ability; greater weight on the listening section (from 25 percent of the total score to one-third); setting a minimum score for each section (vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening) to pass the exam (in the past, an overall passing score would qualify as passing even if one or more sections resulted in a failing score); and new difficulty levels (N1 through N5, instead of current Level 1 through Level 4, with N3 as the level between the current Level 2 and Level 3).
The Japan Times published a booket to help examinees prepare for the new test.
The booklet analyzes the sample questions from levels N1, N2 and N3 (these three levels only will be tested in July), unveiled on the JLPT Web site, clarify the characteristics of the new test and provide study strategies. The booklet is available in Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean. Practice exercises and mock exams of the N1, N2 and N3 levels are included.
The booklet is 224 pages with two CDs for the listening questions. For further information, call The Japan Times Publications Department: (03) 3453-2797.
